Finding the right essential oil or combination of oils to treat your headache pain may take some time. However, you can start by trying oils that others have used successfully. Begin with one oil. If it doesn't work try another or two combined.

Essential Oils for Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most common, everyday type. It feels like a constant pressure around the head, usually at the temples or back of the head or neck. Essential oils for tension headaches include Roman chamomile, Peppermint, Lavender and Rosemary essential oils. They all help ease stress or tension headaches. The scent from these oils is very relaxing, causing the pain from a stress or a tension headache to go away naturally.

Essential Oils for Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are different from tension headaches - instead of a general pressure, the pain is localized and are usually accompanied by watery eyes or a runny nose. Frankincense and Peppermint are the best essential oils for cluster headaches. Since the cause of cluster headaches is not known, these oils focus on relieving the stabbing pain and the congestion, watery eyes, and runny nose that accompany cluster headaches.

You can use Frankincense and Peppermint oils alone or combine the two. Blending oils allow you to treat more than one symptom at a time, which enhances their effectiveness.

Essential Oils for Sinus Headaches

Sinus headaches occur because of a sinus infection. Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and Cypress oils all work well for clearing up the infection that causes sinusitis. These oils break up the congestion and clear mucus from the nasal passages so you can breathe better. When you clear up the cause of a sinus headache, the pain will go away.

Essential Oils for Migraine Headaches

Migraines are the most debilitating of all headaches - believe me, if someone says they have a migraine but they are out shopping or chatting with you, they really don't have a migraine! Migraines are very painful and prohibit normal daily function and are usually accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound. Peppermint, Basil, and Eucalyptus essential oils have helped many people overcome the pain and sensitivity to light and sound that accompany a migraine headache. They can also help ease nausea or sick stomach that goes along with the pain of a migraine.

Essential Oils for Rebound Headaches

If you take medications for headaches, it can trigger a cycle in which the medicines you use to treat the headaches begin to cause even more of them. It’s a difficult situation but essential oils can relieve the pain from rebound headaches naturally, without side effects so you can break the cycle. Peppermint, Lavender, and Frankincense essential oils are the ones most often used to treat rebound headaches.

More Tips about Essential Oils for Headaches

No matter, what essential oils you use, remember to dilute appropriately. I find that applying the diluted oils directly to my forehead or the back of my neck works best for headache relief.

For especially difficult headaches (migraines, etc.) it can also help to apply a warm compress after you've applied the oils - I use a warm compress whenever I have a particularly bad headache and it always helps.

And you can reapply oils! If there is no pain relief after about 20 minutes, reapply the oils and use a warm compress. Repeat until the pain is gone.

Remember, we're all different and one essential oil that I find helpful may not work as well for you. So keep trying different oils until you find the one that works for you.

I have struggled with horrible headache pain for years so I know how difficult dealing with it can be. Essential oils have changed my life in regards to headaches - honestly!

There you go! Now you've learned how to use essential oils for headaches.
