How to Make an Essential Oil Blend: 4 Steps to Making Your Own

Each person's body is unique and may require different amounts of different oils to achieve similar results. There are a few steps you can follow to make things a little bit easier. Step one: What is your goal?

The first step in creating your own essential oil blend is to decide what result you'd like to achieve. Do you have a specific reason for creating this blend?

For example, if you have very dry skin in the winter, you might want to create a blend that you can apply to keep my skin soft and hydrated.

Step Two: Check your reference guide

Once you know what you'd like to create, you'll want to use a reference guide (Google works too, but a reference guide is a great resource to have on-hand).

Let's take our dry skin example. Look up 'dry skin' in the reference guide and make a list of the recommended oils:

  • Rosewood
  • Geranium
  • Lavender
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Davana
  • Jasmine
  • Lemon
  • Neroli
  • Patchouli
  • Sandalwood

In many reference guides, oils are often listed in a recommended order. In my particular reference guide, the first color-coded list is place in recommended order and the second list is a selection of other recommended oils in alphabetical order.

There are also notations beside each oil (A, T, or I - for aromatic, topical, or internal use). Since I am planning to create a topical blend, I look at only those oils marked with a 'T'.

Step Three: Choose two oils to test

Look through the list of recommended oils for any that you already own (it's always great to start with what you already have!) or you can purchase a few new oils to try. Start with 2 oils from the recommendations in the reference guide.

Consider the scent of each essential oil and choose two that smell nice together. You can also choose two oils from the same botanical family or that have similar constituents (your reference guide should have this information). Also consider the 'notes' of the oil. Some are fruity, others are woodsy or floral. When you've narrowed down your list of essential oil choices, consider how they will smell together and what scents you prefer.

Looking at our dry skin example, perhaps Lavender (a floral scent) would work nicely with Lemon (a citrus scent).

Choose one oil, dilute it with a carrier oil and apply to the area of concern. Watch for any changes. If you see positive results, then you've found an oil that will work for you. If you see little or no change, repeat this step with another oil. After you've discovered two that work well together (and that smell nice to you), dilute and apply both oils to test one final time.

This step may take a few days, depending on what you are hoping to achieve. When you've found two oils that meet your needs, you're ready for the next step.

Step Four: Create your blend

Now it's time to dilute! Depending on the type of blend you are creating, whether it's an everyday blend or a therapeutic blend for occasional use, you will want to start with a carrier oil and follow these dilution guidelines:

  • For an everyday blend, start with 2-3 drops essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil (for adults) or 1 drop essential oil for every teaspoon (for children).
  • For therapeutic, short-term use (not recommended for children or the elderly), try a 10-20% dilution (10-20 drops essential oil per teaspoon of oil).
  • For a massage blend, 50 drops essential oil to 4 oz. carrier oil is sufficient.

In a dark colored bottle (save your empty essential oil bottles to create your own blends -- a 15 ml bottle will hold about three teaspoons of liquid), combine the carrier oil and the essential oils you've chosen.

First, measure out the drops of essential oil according to the dilution guidelines above, allowing them to drip right into the empty bottle. After you've measured out your drops of essential oil, fill the remainder of the bottle with carrier oil.

Taking our dry skin example, after testing and deciding to use Lavender and Lemon, and knowing it will be for everyday use, add 4-5 drops of each oil to a 15 ml bottle before filling with carrier oil.

Top with an orifice reducer or roller-ball top. Keep the blend tightly closed and stored in a cool, dark location to protect its efficacy. Don't forget to label the bottle!

Using your new essential oil blend

Now that you've made an essential oil blend -- it's time to use it! If you keep it in a roller-ball style bottle, it's as simple as swiping it right on the location you'd like to use it. If it's more of a 'mood-enhancing' blend, apply to your temples, behind your ears, or on your wrists.
