The benefits of bath salts

While a bubbly bath tub can be lots of fun, bath salts are more than just a simple bath time addition. There are many benefits to using bath salts in your bath water. I prefer Epsom salts in my bath water. Here are just a few reasons why:

  • stress relief
  • relaxing
  • natural exfoliation
  • detoxifying
  • relieves muscle tension
  • relief for dry, itchy skin conditions

Bath salts are a great base for other healthy ingredients like essential oils. If you just add essential oils to your bath water, they'll just float on the top and probably irritate your skin. But when they are mixed into salt, the oil will distribute throughout the water, giving your bathing ritual even more health benefits.

How to Make Your Own Bath Salts

Making your own bath salts is a simple project with just a few ingredients. All you need for this essential oils bath salts recipe:

* bath salts (I prefer Epsom salts)
* coconut oil
* essential oils
* small glass jars (1 cup size works great for gift-giving)

The 'recipe' is quite simple and doesn't have to be very exact. I use about 15 drops of (my favorite brand - affiliate link -->) essential oil for every cup of bath salts.

Begin by melting 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Measure out 30 drops of essential oils (lavender is a great oil for bath time) into the coconut oil. Add this mixture to 2 cups of bath salts, giving it a good stir to make sure the oil is evenly distributed. Pour the mixture into a glass jar and store in a cool, dry place until ready to use.

To use: add 1/4 cup (or 1/2 cup for very large bathtubs) bath salts to your bath water. Enjoy a nice, relaxing soak.

If you prefer to make your own bath salt blend with a few essential oils, consider some of the following oils:

  • Lavender
  • Roman chamomile
  • Rosewood
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Patchouli

One quick way to make bath salts:

I love making small batches of bath salts with my empty essential oil bottles - it's a great way to get every last drop of oil and an easy way to make homemade bath salts with essential oils.

Simply place your empty essential oil bottles in a small bowl of Epsom salt (about 1/2 cup of salt), pushing them down into the salt. Leave them overnight and in the morning remove the jar and stir the salts. You've got a few empty bottles for other projects and a nice, soothing bath in your future!
