Essential Oils & Cluster Headaches

Like other types of headaches, cluster headaches can be relieved by using a few essential oils. Before we jump to the how-to, let’s get clear on our definitions.

What is a cluster headache anyway?

Cluster headache symptoms include a blocked or a runny nose, watering or red eyes, and intense pain around one eye or localized to one side of the face. They commonly occur seasonally and can be actually be confused with seasonal allergies.

How to use Essential Oils for Cluster Headache Relief

You can use essential oils in a few different ways for cluster headache relief. You can diffuse essential oils, use a personal inhaler, or apply them topically to your temples or the back of your neck to soothe your headache pain. At the same time, you want to deal with the symptoms that occur with a cluster headache - a blocked or a runny nose and watering eyes.

Many people find that one method works best for them - and you’ll only know what works best for you after trying each method.

Let’s look at each method:

Diffusing Essential Oils for Cluster Headache Relief

Diffusing essential oils is a simple way to use them - just add 8-10 drops to your essential oil diffuser along with some tap water. Plug it in and turn it on for 30 minutes to an hour.

Many people find that diffusing is their favorite option for headache relief.

Below, you'll find a list of essential oils that are helpful for headache relief as well as a master blend recipe that works great in the diffuser.

Personal Inhaler Blend for Cluster Headache Relief

If running a diffuser isn't an option or you prefer not to use a diffuser, another great choice is a personal inhaler. Simply soak the cotton wick in your essential oil blend (15 drops is more than sufficient) before inserting in the inhaler and adding the cap. Add a label and you are all set. The aroma should last quite awhile as long as it's closed when not use.

To use the inhaler, just remove the cap, holding the inhaler beneath your nostrils, and inhale deeply a few times, repeating until your headache and other symptoms are relieved.

Create your own essential oil blend using the oils recommended at the end of this article or use the master blend listed below.

Topical Essential Oil Blend for Cluster Headache Relief

Headaches are painful so a 2-3% short-term dilution is fine to use. If that dilution doesn’t work, you may need to go higher - which is alright since it’s only for short-term use. This isn't a dilution you should be using every day.

Add 6-15 drops of essential oil to a 10ml roller ball bottle, filling the bottle with a carrier oil. (6 drops would create a 2% dilution; 15 drops would create a 5% dilution.)

Use the master blend listed below or create your own blend from the list of recommended essential oils at the end of this article.

Cluster Headache Essential Oil Blend

I love creating master blends. Instead of opening three or four bottles each time I want to blend them together (repeatedly opening the bottles can shorten the shelf life of your essential oils), I add a large amount of each to one small 5ml bottle. Then, when I want to diffuse, add oils to an inhaler, or create a topical blend, I just need to pull out one bottle instead of three or four.

Tip: If you're creating your own master blends, a 5ml bottle will hold about 100 drops of essential oil.

Here's a blend specifically designed for cluster headache relief (and all those accompanying symptoms):

Add the drops of essential oil to one 5ml bottle and close tightly, adding a label. Don't add carrier oil to this master blend. Use the blend to fill your diffuser or add 10-15 drops to an inhaler. For a topical blend, see the section above for the recommended dilution ratio.

Best Essential Oils for Cluster Headaches

If you want to create your own blends, there are certain oils that work well as a headache remedy.

Depending on your symptoms, you’ll want to combine a variety of oils. Start with one or two essential oils for pain or tension relief, add another for relieving congestion, and select a third for it’s soothing and calming benefits.

If you don't want to create your own blend, there are some great pre-made options available - all pre-diluted and ready to roll-on. Here are some of my favorites:

Migraine Support Roll-on from Rocky Mountain Oils

Rapid Relief Roll-on from Plant Therapy
