More about The Complete Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Handbook

"Essential oils have been variously described as the “life force” or “essence” of plants. The most wonderful thing about essential oils is that they are available to everyone, and once you understand the basic concepts and observe the appropriate methods and procedures, they are very simple to use.
Aromatherapy is a method of using the essential oils to protect, heal and beautify. The best-known way to employ oils is through massage, but as you’ll discover in this comprehensive book, there are so many more ways to use them for everything from arthritis and asthma to high blood pressure and constipation. Essential oils are attracting more attention and emerging as scientifically proven and accepted remedies.
This book features 109 oils and more than 450 remedies. The recipes are easy to follow, do not take long to make, and are quite inexpensive — the biggest cost is the oils. The oils are organized in an A to Z format, and each entry features the botanical name and a full description of how and why the oil is extracted, as well as its therapeutic uses."

The authors of the book:

Nerys Purchon was one of Australia’s leading experts on aromatherapy and essential oils. Her books have sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide.

Lora Cantele, RA, CMAIA, AAS, is a registered aromatherapist, clinical aromatologist, certified Swiss reflex therapist, aromatherapy educator, and writer.

A Closer Look at the Book

The book is black & white (no colorful images) with lots of information and helpful tips and notes in the margins. With more than 400 pages, it covers everything you’d need to know as a beginner or intermediate. It’s divided into four parts:

  • The Oils
  • Remedies
  • Aromatherapy for Daily Living
  • Practicalities

The first section focuses on taking a comprehensive look at key essential oils, hydrolats, and carrier oils. It’s a great section for looking at the properties of individual oils. You’ll learn a bit of history about the oil, how it’s distilled, which oils to blend with, the properties of the oil, and a list of ways to use that specific oil. You’ll also find specific notes and cautions about that oil in the margins.

Section two will be your everyday handbook. If you’re looking for ways to use essential oils for specific concerns, you would flip to this section to find what you need to know. Everything is alphabetized to find things quickly. Each entry includes basic information about the issue, a list of essential oils to use, blend recipes for that specific concern, and a list of ways to use those essential oils and blends for treatment. You’ll also find helpful tips in the margin.

The third section, Aromatherapy for Daily Living, is divided into a few parts. In part one, you’ll learn how to make your own skin, hair, and body care products using essential oils. There are plenty of tips and recipes for all kinds of skin and hair types. The second part focuses on home care recipes and ideas. The final part will teach you how to use essential oils for massage.

The final section of the book focuses on practical things like the equipment you’ll need (especially if you’re going to be making your own home or body care products). There’s also a helpful section on measuring essential oils (how much to use for DIY recipes).
